anthropologie in toronto

What a fine day it is today...not only is it Earth Day, but my favourite store ever opened its doors in Toronto at the Shops at Don Mills. You have heard me gush about Anthropologie here, here, and here. I'm itching to check it out, but I also remember the lineups and craziness when Crate and Barrel opened last fall, so I might just wait a bit as a favour to my clautrophobic side. But I can barely stop myself...afterall there aren't too many stores that have blogs and Flickr collections dedicated to their inspiring visual displays, products, graphics and beautiful sense of design.

According to Toronto Styles, t
he first window and store displays will be focused around honey bees. It will reflect in abstract ways upon their role in our world. Bee related iconography like hives and honeycombs will be recreated with unexpected materials and whimsy. I think artistic inspiration is a good enough reason for an excursion to check it out...don't you?

happy earth day

I'm always intrigued with simple, clever ideas that can make a huge impact, so I loved the idea behind The Spruce Initiative. Vancouver's Felicity Fane {who holds a Ph.D. in Transformation and Consciousness, not to mention her additional degrees in Architecture and Chemical Engineering - whoa baby!} originated the project after she travelled to visit family in Switzerland and marvelled at how clean it was. When she returned home, she decided that she would pick up one piece of garbage {or rubbish as she calls it - it does sound so much better than garbage!} per day and she is hoping that this simple and easy idea will catch on. If everyone picked up just one piece of rubbish a day, think of what a huge difference that would make!

You can read more about the project here. And in case you need some incentive, if helping the environment isn't incentive enough - Felicity has found a bunch of cool things while sprucing up her city including a $50 bill, and a Starbucks coffee card {good for a free cup of coffee}!
Happy Earth Day...

i love you yellow shirt

P. and I went to see I Love You Man this weekend and I actually really enjoyed it! Not only was it hilarious, but it catered to my inner fashionista. While P. was taken with all of the Rush music, I was eyeing all of the yellow featured in the wardrobe of Rashida Jones' character Zooey. And there was one yellow shirt in particular, with beautiful circle detailing, that I was crazy for! After a quick search on the web yesterday I realized I wasn't the only one hunting down this beautiful number. Luckily Possessionista tracked it down at Pringle of Scotland - however with a $750 price tag I might just try constructing it myself! Check out the yellow duds, the cheery yellow wedding, and the coveted yellow shirt {and a zoom-in on the circle detailing}. I love you, yellow shirt...

calligraphy: an inky treat

{I meant to post this on Bloomerism today, but I posted it here by mistake! I will leave it here too...happy weekend Bloomers!}
..................
Growing up, my mom had a friend named Linda who was a calligrapher. We would get birthday cards with the most stunning handwritten addresses on the envelope. And every Christmas Linda would create these incredible, custom-designed, calligraphed and illustrated calendars for her extended family that included important birthdays and occasions. I thought these were the most beautiful things I had ever seen! I begged my mom for a calligraphy set and lessons. I think I was 5 years old at the time and my mom had to remind me that I need to learn to print first...oh yeah...

Well eventually the time came and I got a new calligraphy set and Linda gave me a few wonderful lessons. Finally it was my turn to create a custom calendar for my family! So, at age 10 that is what I set out to do...see above for the result. Haha...I love the whited out 'S' where I tried to write '9'. Not bad for 10 years old though, I guess!

I still love calligraphy, and with everything designed and printed by computer these days, it's so refreshing and beautiful to see elegant handwriting in its inky goodness...a true artform! Check out some of these beauties. I am thinking that I might actually give it a go again and take a calligraphy course. There's no doubt that my mouse-shaped claw of a hand could use some exercise!

Calligraphers from the top:
1. Joelle Bloomer, circa 1987
2. Jenna Hein {wow!}
3. Rebecca Trawick
4. Linea Carta
5. Crystal Kluge

bring on the braids

I'm loving this side-braid hairstyle apparently made famous by Lauren Conrad, but made a bit more sophisticated by Jennifer Aniston at the Oscars. I tried this easy 'do on the weekend - and believe me, it salvages a bad hair day {and growing-in bangs} extremely well!

painted chairs

These painted green chairs are right up my alley! A few years ago when we moved into our house, P. and I bought some lovely leather chairs for our kitchen table - they are really nice but I guess as time moves on, my taste is changing a bit and I am drawn to bright colours and cool architecture and shapes.

{I've been really bad at tracking where I'm saving my photos from lately, so unfortunately the source of this photo is unknown :(}

inBloom Studio Boutique

Have you heard of Big Cartel? It's a cool program that allows small businesses to host an online shop without all of the hassle - or in their words 'Simple Stores for DIY Rockstars'! I decided to create a small store {it's free for 5 items and under} to sell some prints of the nature pattern watercolours I created in my Australian illustration course. I've found a way to print the paintings on watercolour paper so they look almost identical to the original art. Check them out at inBloom Studio Boutique!

lovely weekend

I hope everyone had a great long weekend! I had a good one filled with lots of productive work around the house, a birthday party for my sis, and then a nice day of nothingness! I'm a workaholic so usually I get a bit excited for the weekend as it means more time to get more work done...warped, I know. I am trying to get out of that rut so P. and I have decided to allow one day {or afternoon} each weekend to escape the house and work and go on a fun outing or to a restaurant we have always wanted to try. By scheduling this time in, I'm hoping we stick with it!

We set out on our inaugural journey yesterday to one of my favourite places in Toronto - the Distillery District, an old distillery filled with industrial buildings and architecture from the 1800's that has been turned onto an artsy spot of cafes, flower shops, galleries, restaurants and funky stores. Lots of beauty and inspiration there. We had a delicious buffet brunch at the Boiler House Grill and then checked out some favourite spots like Soma {BEST chocolate ever!} and Balzac's Coffee {where it's not too hard to pretend that you are in Paris}. Overall a wonderful weekend! I hope you had a good one too...

{photos by me, but I nabbed the one of Balzac's off the web somewhere!}

my logo was at the juno awards {part II} + chantal kreviazuk

Remember when I mentioned that one of my clients had created the cool swag for the Juno Awards a few weeks ago? Well Gabrielle of The Uptown Giftbox Company was kind enough to send me some photos of the logo I created for her company onscreen at the award show...very cool! Thanks so much Gabrielle.

And speaking of Canadian music...it has become a tradition that my dad, sisters and I see a Chantal Kreviazuk concert every once in a while at a small and intimate venue. Last night we went to the brand spanking new Richmond Hill Performing Arts Centre {beautiful I might add} and it was a stunning concert! I loved the singing, the banter, the mix of piano, cello and violin and the emotion in each song. My sister said it best today but I just wanted to say that I love love loved every minute of it {including her moppy-haired little boys who joined her onstage for the final song}! And now I have a new secret dream, seeing that I probably won't be a backup dancer for Janet Jackson anytime soon...I want to play the cello.

paint chip prints

Check out these Paint Chip Prints from Secret Leaves - they are antique images printed straight onto paint chips! Pretty nifty. And such a clever way to use old paint chips {I do have a lot of them...right Paintin' Pete?}.

woodland chic

Over the weekend my sisters and I decorated a big tent at the Wooden Sticks Golf Course in Uxbridge for a wedding show on Sunday. We went with a Woodland Chic theme to match the gorgeous natural surroundings and paired a fresh Springy green with a rich chocolate brown. For centrepieces, we used wooden sticks {well...they were actually cherry blossom branches} and green spider mums, along with beautiful green and white lanterns. It was just a mock wedding but it turned out beautifully! See Bloomerism for more information and pics!

the clutch

I wrote a post a while back on Bloomerism about clutches and I just found a bunch more on Etsy that I love! Check out these beauties from Shakuyaku. Which one would you choose?!

console table

I finally got around to decorating my console table for Spring! I did away with the previous winter wonderland and made way for some fresh greens and yellows. Check out the beautiful forsythia! I wish they lasted forever.

Design for Conscious Living: thanks for the shout-out!

A quick thank you to Celia of Design for Conscious Living for the shout-out to me and inBloom Studio on her new blog! I am blushing...

I recently designed Celia's business cards and had them printed on a linen cardstock and they turned out beautifully! For more of Celia's work, you can check out her website here...

april fool

Martha has some cute {and pretty tame/non-toxic!} April Fool's Day tricks on her website! From the top: blue food colouring in milk; serve an ice cream sundae - but it's really mashed potatoes and gravy; serve a baked potato - but it's really an ice cream sundae {I like this trick much better!}; fake-out insect {actually this may give me a panic attack...maybe not such a good trick!}; and rearranging your spouse's drawers...I might try this one out!
